First, the basics – how to set the home page of your browser.
IE web browser
First, access to the page you want to use as your homepage. That means if you want to use the “iGoogle” Custom homepage service of Google, a simple step to get there – http://www.iGoogle.com.
Then, while on that page, click on the Tools menu, Internet Options section, and then click the General tab.
First, access to the page you want to use as your homepage.
You can view Google page in the background, and that all in Internet Options is set to preview the MSN page.
Simply click the Use Current button and then the OK button and select your home page will be changed to the site you’re viewing.
The procedures are similar to Firefox.
First navigate to the web page you want as your new homepage. Then click on the Tools menu, select the item, and the main tabs:
Again, you can see the Google page in the background, and the Home page in the Options dialog box is set to preview the MSN page.
Simply click the Use Current Page, and then OK, and the homepage will be changed to the page you’re on.
Why does this happen?
There are three reasons for a sudden change homepage.
It asked and you answered yes.
This is probably the most common scenario. When installing the software never accept the default settings that can be provided. Always choose “custom” or set the “advanced” settings of options when asked. The reason is simple – very often is one of the default option is to change the home page of your browser. Make sure you pay attention to all the options that are provided when you install or update software, and take care to not participate in any change like this you do not want to receive. (Install additional toolbars in your browser is a popular choice down the road.)
It does not require and did it anyway.
Some installed programs do not bother to ask. They simply assume that because you are installing what they have to offer, they have the right to change your home page as they see fit. In my opinion this is a bad thing, but it happens. Watch for it when you install the software, and prepared to return to using the above guidelines if it is not.
It’s hard to call this other than the third scenario …
Malware did it.
Spyware is absolutely notorious for hijacking the homepage. Normally it is not something as benign as a preview page MSN, but often to the site have more problems. Make sure you are running a solution against spyware good to protect yourself from this situation.
Update: Some people are coming here because of a change obviously with MSN home page. I wrote a new post on that: How do I get back to the old site msn.com?
It’s really quite annoying, but many programs install software these days will offer to change the home page of your browser “you” to anything they think it should be. Sometimes they do not even ask and just do it, which to me is simply unacceptable.
Since I create and use your browser’s home page of my own, it is more than a little uncomfortable when it is changed out from underneath me.
So yes, let me show you how to reset it, and throw out one or two shots to avoid it is changed again, “for you” in the future.
